Second ‘March Against Monsanto’ Expected Saturday

For related articles and more information, please visit OCA’s Genetic Engineering page and our Millions Against Monsanto page.

Thousands, if not millions, of people are expected to take to the streets across the world on Saturday in the second “March Against Monsanto” to protest the biotech giant.

Organizers say demonstrations have been scheduled for Saturday, October 12 in six continents, 52 countries and over 500 cities to call for the permanent boycott of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and harmful agro-chemicals.

A list of marches can be seen at www.march-against-monsanto.com.

Last spring an estimated two million people joined in over 436 cities in 52 countries during the first March Against Monsanto, which was originally only expected to draw 3,000.

MAM founder Tami Monroe Canal, who started the movement last May, has stated, “Monsanto’s predatory business and corporate agricultural practices threatens their generation’s health, fertility and longevity. MAM supports a sustainable food production system. We must act now to stop GMOs and harmful pesticides.”

Roberta Gogos, MAM organizer in Athens, Greece, said Monsanto has had a drastic impact on austerity-hit Europe. “Monsanto is working very hard to overturn EU regulation on obligatory labeling where enforcement is already lax. Greece is in a precarious position right now, and Greece’s farmers are positioned to follow the same perilous fate as farmers in countries such as Colombia and Mexico.”

Does organic milk mean that the cows have been treated humanely?

Question by c’est moi: Does organic milk mean that the cows have been treated humanely?
I’m a vegetarian, and I eat dairy. I buy cage-free eggs, but I’ve been wondering about cruelty-free milk and cheese too. I read a PETA article about how badly cows are treated at some dairy farms. Is this also true for organic farms? Is it possible to buy cruelty-free milk?

it’s not going to be guaranteed. i’m not completely positive, but i’m pretty sure organic means that the cows were fed organically, without steroids, etc. there is no way for sure to buy cruelty free milk, mainly because owners/bosses of dairy farms cannot watch how every single person treats every single cow, and i’m sure most of them don’t even really care enough to spend ridiculous amounts of money on. try other alternatives to milk. i drink soy milk (8th continent and silk are good, vanilla, chocolate, and original) but they also have rice milk, almond milk, etc. experiment with different things, but i would recommend using plain milk (not soy or anything) when cooking (i tried to make instant pudding with soy milk and it would not set or anything–stayed liquid in the refrigerator for like, 3 days before i threw it out). good luck!

Washington Labor Unions Endorse I-522

For related articles and more information, please visit OCA’s Genetic Engineering page, Millions Against Monsanto page and our Washington News page.

The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO endorses Initiative 522 because everyone in our state deserves to know what is in their food before they buy it. I-522 would require foods such as breakfast cereals, chips and many other pantry staples to be labeled if they contain ingredients that have been genetically modified. The main reason that foods are genetically modified is so they can withstand exposure to pesticides and herbicides, chemicals that are known toxins.

The workers who are most vulnerable to the toxic exposure associated with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are farm workers. For this reason, the United Farm Workers have taken a strong stance in favor of I-522. They are joined by the Washington State Nurses Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46, and dozens of other unions, environmental groups and sustainable businesses.

Many of the organizations that support I-522 stood up to support farm workers who told their stories about the horrors of pesticide exposure in Olympia last year at the hearing on HB 2413, legislation to protect people from dangerous pesticide drift. The stories of rashes, vomiting, respiratory distress and birth defects from exposure to aerial crop dusting were grotesque and sobering. Imagine your boss dumping tons of toxic chemicals on you and your children! I-522 will give consumers the chance to decide against genetically modified organism (GMO) products that require the intensified chemical use.
